I was once reluctant to be “political”

One of my first posts on the Educated Policy Facebook page is pictured above. It shows a mix of how far I’ve come, and how far I have to go.

I am amused that I was once reluctant to be “political.” I now know that “If you don’t do politics, politics will do you” – a frequent reminder among my fellow advocates.

The original question, “How can teachers build united fronts with concerned citizens in their communities?” is an answer I’m still working toward.

My family, the school district I attended, and community where I grew up in Canandaigua, New York continues to serve as a strong foundation for the work I do today inside and outside the classroom.

I appreciate the patience of my husband and my kids as I advocate for our schools. I know I test it, but I also know you understand and I’m grateful for your support.

I look forward to the day where my second job is no longer advocating for my first job. I’d like to one day make it more of a hobby instead of the consuming but necessary work it is now.

I hope my work on this site and in my state helps to get closer to answering the question I first posed five years ago.
